just cruise, brah!

During this past week began the first day of summer, the kick off of all sorts of outdoor activity in this ‘bustling metropolis’ known as zoo york. Some sure signs of summer: people in bedstuy smashing their fire hydrants and unleashing homemade water parks on hot grimy concrete sidewalks and streets. Construction workers out catcalling and then accordingly insulting you if you don’t acknowledge them back, i.e, “Bitch, you chunky anyway! shiiiiiiiite”. Kids and adults alike running after the ice cream man who remains ever elusive, stopping only at certain street corners (you know “kool man” is so much more happenin’ than mr softee!). Anyway, also coinciding with the beginning of the summer is the start of the Rocks Off concert cruises! This year they have cruises for The Weakerthans, Bad Brains, Kid Koala, The Pietasters, and many more. The first cruise I ended up buying tickets for was The Weakerthans. Aboard a boat pinned ‘the temptress’, we undocked and enjoyed a gorgeous viewing of the sunset, with the manhattan skyline on our left and the cesspool of new jersey on our right. We basically circled the Hudson river a bunch of times while the band played. They were really good, they played mostly new songs and everyone was stoked on them. Here are a few pics.

That cruise was on Friday, and yesterday (Monday) I went back for more to see Bad Brains aboard the same boat! HR was totally just walking around chillin, and he even came up to me to chat! We shot the shit for alittle awhile, and enjoyed the reggae beats the DJ was playing. BB came on around 9:30 and the place went insane. HR kept his hands in a prayer pose and addressed us as his “holy family”, while he was the holy leader. Luckily he didn’t spew any hate, which I was weary of since he is an open homophobe. Anyway, the crowd was going absolutely mad and jumping off the second floor level into the pit! Part of the ceiling fell off too. I thought we were going to sink! Hah. Anyway, I noticed next up is Weston in July. Any takers?
